The contact details that the visitor can use to transmit any requests, notifications or claims regarding the Terms and Conditions, Privacy Policy, this Cookie Policy, as well as any other information published on the Platform, policies or operations performed by NGO, are indicated at point 1 above.
The deadline for MITO to send a response is no more than 30 days from the receipt of the request.
- General information
NGO uses its own and third-party cookies to provide users with a much better browsing experience and services tailored to their needs and interests. In what is known as “Web 2.0”, “cookies” play an important role in making it easier for users to access the services they enjoy on the Internet by customising certain settings such as the language in which a site is displayed or the currency in which prices are displayed.
- Purpose of cookies
The role of cookies is to:
- provide the sites’ owners (implicitly and MITO) with valuable feedback on how their sites are used by visitors, so that they can make them even more efficient and accessible to users;
- allows multimedia or other applications from other sites to be included in their own site, to create a more valuable, useful and enjoyable browsing experience;
- improve the efficiency of online advertising.
- The definition of cookies
The term “cookie” refers to the technologies by which certain information is collected automatically. An “Internet Cookie” (also known as a “browser cookie” or “HTTP cookie” or simply “cookie”) is a small file, consisting of letters and numbers, that will be stored on the user’s computer, mobile device or other equipment of a user accessing the Internet.
The cookie is installed by a web server’s request from a browser (eg Internet Explorer, Chrome) and is completely “passive” (does not contain software, viruses or spyware and cannot access the information on the hard drive to the user who installed them).
A cookie consists of 2 parts:
- name
- the content or value of the cookie
Cookies themselves do not require personal information to be used and, in most cases, do not personally identify Internet users. Furthermore, the lifetime of a cookie is limited from the moment of installation. Technically, only the web server that sent the cookie can access it again when a visitor returns to the website associated with that webserver.
- Main categories of cookies
Session cookies
These are temporarily stored in the cookie folder of the web browser for it to store until the visitor exits the respective web-site or closes the browser window.
Persistent cookies
These are stored on the hard drive of a computer or device (and generally depend on the default cookie lifetime). Persistent cookies include those placed by a website other than the one that the visitor accesses at that time – known as ‘third party cookies’ – which can be used anonymously. to memorize the interests of a user so that the most relevant advertising is delivered to visitors.
- Timespan of cookies
Cookies are managed by web servers. The timespan of a cookie is limited and can vary significantly depending on the purpose for which it is placed.
Thus, some cookies are only used for a single session (session cookies) and are no longer retained once the user has left the site and some cookies are retained and reused each time the user returns to that site until the expiry date – which can be minutes, hours, days or even years (permanent or fixed cookies). However, cookies can be deleted by the user at any time through browser settings.
- Cookies placed by third parties
Certain content sections on some sites may be provided through third parties / providers (eg news box, a video or an advertisement). These third parties may also place cookies through the site and they are called “third party cookies”, because they are not placed by the owner of the respective website. Third party providers must also comply with the law in force and the privacy policies of the owner of the Platform, namely MITO.
- Information processed by means of cookies
Cookies store information in a small text file that allows a website to recognize a browser. The web server shall recognize the browser until the cookie expires or is deleted.
The cookie stores important information that improves the Internet browsing experience, depending on the type of cookie implemented on the Platform, but also those that identify errors of use (e.g. the language settings in which the user wishes to access the Site).
- Use of cookies by the Platform
Cookies store information in a small text file that allows a website to recognise a browser. The web server will recognise the browser until the cookie expires or is deleted.
The cookie stores important information that enhances the web browsing experience, depending on the type of cookie deployed, as well as information that identifies usage errors.
A visit on the Platform may place cookies for the purposes of:

Therefore, in relation to the above, cookies are used on the Platform as follows:

As long as a visitor is not registered on this Platform as an user (registration option which is not offered by the Platform), this cookie cannot be used to identify individuals, being used solely for statistical purposes.
If a user is registered on a site, the information they have already provided on that occasion, such as their email address and password, may also be known – these are subject to the privacy and confidentiality provisions of that site’s terms and conditions, its data protection policy and current data protection legislation.
The Platform does not provides for the possibility of creating a user account.
Cookie for geotargetting

These cookies are used by a software that determines which country the Platform visitors come from (in particular, using Google Analytics) by collecting IP addresses. The cookie is used to ensure the security of the Platform, but also to optimize the interaction with users, being used anonymously (users can also hide the collected IP addresses) in order to target the content.

These cookies allow NGO to find out whether or not a visitor has viewed an online advertisement, what type of advertisement it is and how much time has passed since the visitor saw the advertisement. These cookies are also used to target online advertising, retaining information about the content viewed and not about visitors. MITO may also use third-party cookies for enhanced ad targeting. These cookies are anonymous, storing information about the content viewed, not about users. NGO also sets anonymous cookies through other sites/apps on which it advertises. Once it receives them, it may use them to recognize a person as a visitor and if they later visit the Platform, it may provide advertising based on that information.
Cookie from third-party advertising providers

Some of the advertising you find on the Platform may belong to third parties. Some of these parties use their own anonymous cookies to analyze how many people have been exposed to a message, or to see how many people have been exposed multiple times to the same advertisement. For example, when something is shared using the social media button on the Platform, that social network will record the activity. Third party cookies may be used to display targeted advertisements to the user even on other sites/applications, based on browsing preferences recorded on the Platform.
- Advantages of cookies
A cookie contains information that links a web-browser (user / visitor) to a particular web-server (the Platform). If a browser accesses that web-server again, it can read the information already stored and react accordingly. Cookies provide visitors with a pleasant browsing experience and support the efforts of many websites to provide comfortable and easily accessible services to users: eg. preferences regarding online confidentiality or relevant advertising.
- Recommendations for the use of cookies
Cookies are the central point of the efficient functioning of the Internet, helping to generate a friendly browsing experience and adapted to the preferences and interests of each user.
Refusing or disabling cookies can make some sites impossible to use.
Refusing or deactivating cookies does not mean that visitors shall no longer receive online advertising – only that they shall no longer be able to take into account their preferences and interests, highlighted by their browsing behavior.
Due to their flexibility and the fact that most of the most visited and largest websites use cookies, these are almost inevitable. Disabling cookies shall not allow visitor access to the most popular and used sites including Youtube, Gmail, Yahoo and others.
- Security and privacy issues
Cookies are NOT viruses! They use plain text formats. They are not made up of pieces of code so they cannot be executed nor can they auto-run. Consequently, they cannot be duplicated or replicated on other networks to run or replicate themselves again. Since they cannot perform these functions, they cannot be considered viruses.
However, cookies can still be used for negative purposes. Because they store information about users’ browsing preferences and history, cookies can be used as a form of spyware, both on private sites/applications and on other sites/applications. Many anti-spyware products are aware of this fact and constantly mark cookies for deletion in antivirus/anti-spyware removal/scanning procedures. Browsers generally have built-in privacy settings that offer different levels of cookie acceptance, validity period and automatic deletion after the user has visited a particular site/application.
As identity protection is extremely valuable and a right of every internet user, it is best to be aware of the potential problems that cookies can create. Since they constantly transmit information to and from the browser and the Platform, if an attacker or unauthorised person interferes with the data transmission process, the information contained in the cookie can be intercepted. Although very rare, this can happen if the browser connects to the server over an unencrypted network (e.g. an unsecured WiFi network).
Other cookie-based attacks are due to incorrect cookie settings on servers. If a website does not require the browser to use encrypted channels exclusively, attackers can use this vulnerability to trick browsers into sending information through unsecured channels. Attackers then use the information to gain unauthorised access to certain sites/applications. It is very important for users to be careful when choosing the most appropriate method to protect their personal information.
- Tips for safe and responsible browsing based on cookies
Given their flexibility and the fact that most of the most visited and largest sites/applications use cookies, they are almost inevitable. Disabling cookies will not allow the user access to the most popular and widely used sites/applications, including Youtube, Gmail, Yahoo and others.
If the visitor is not disturbed by cookies and is the only person using the computer, he or she may set long deadlines for storing browsing history and personal access data. However, if the visitor shares access to the computer, they may consider setting the browser to delete individual browsing data each time they close the browser. This is a way to access websites that place cookies and delete any visit information at the end of your browsing session.
Installation and constant updating of antispyware applications
Many spyware detection and prevention applications include site attack detection. This prevents the browser from accessing sites that might exploit browser vulnerabilities or download dangerous software. As a result, visitors need to make sure they have their browser updated. Many of the cookie-based attacks are made by exploiting the weaknesses of older versions of browsers.
Cookies are everywhere and cannot be avoided if the user wants to access the best and biggest sites/applications on the Internet – local or international. With a clear understanding of how they work and the benefits they bring, the user can take the necessary security measures to surf the internet with confidence.
Thus, the user can customise their browser settings for cookies at any time to reflect a comfortable level of data security and cookie usage.
- How to stop cookies
Disabling and refusing to receive some cookies may make certain sites/applications unusable, only partially usable or difficult to visit and use. Furthermore, refusing to accept cookies does not mean that visitors will no longer receive/view online advertising. It is possible to set the browser to refuse these cookies or to set user’s browser to accept only certain categories of cookies.
All modern browsers offer the possibility to change cookie settings. These settings are usually found in the “options” or “preferences” menu of the browser. The user is also asked to use the cookie options bar on the Platform for this purpose.
Thus, the visitor of the Platform can at any time modify its choices concerning the cookies for which its consent is required by unchecking the appropriate box.
These settings can be found in the pop-up permanently available at the bottom of the page, where the user can choose between choosing all cookies by clicking the OK button. Accept all AND Custom cookies settings, where the user will choose cookies according to its preferences. - Final provisions
This policy applies to MITO and to the Platform users.
MITO reserves the right to modify / update the content of the Platform, including the policies to which reference is made, at its sole discretion, at any time and for any reason (including but not limited to the occurrence of legislative or jurisprudential changes that may affect the consequences to those published on the Platform). The revision of this policy in the future shall be indicated by modifying the date of “Last update” at the top of the page. After the date the updated policy is published, accessing the Platform will represent the user’s acceptance of these updated conditions.
However, if there are significant changes that could affect the rights and freedoms of visitors, informing them about those changes will be made by easily visible indications posted on the Platform (pop-ups) or by sending emails on the addresses provided, if applicable. Such significant changes will have effects for visitors within 15 days from the time of the posting of the pop-up in question or of sending the email by NGO (how the information will be made being decided by MITO, by on a case by case basis).
However, regardless of the extent of the change, the responsibility to check the content of the Platform (including the Terms and Conditions, as well as the policies displayed), to be up to date with the latest versions, will be entirely the responsibility of the user. Thus, THE STUDY OF TERMS AND CONDITIONS, BUT ALSO OF THE PRIVACY POLICY AND OF THIS COOKIE POLICY, MUST BE PERFORMED BY THE VISITORS WHENEVER THEY ACCESS THIS PLATFORM AND BEFORE MAKING ANY REGISTRATION OR PROVIDING DATA, WHEREAS CHANGES CAN APPEAR.
